Hugh Black was a Scottish-American theologian and author. He was born March 26, 1868, in Rothesay, Scotland. He studied at Glasgow University and received a Master of Arts degree in 1887, then studied divinity at Free Church College in Glasgow from 1887 to 1891. He was ordained in 1891, becoming associate pastor at St. George's Free Presbyterian Church in Edinburgh in 1896. Hugh Black emigrated to the United States in 1906, becoming chair of Practical Theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He received three honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees: one from Yale University in 1908, then from Princeton University and Glasgow University in 1911. Later he accepted a position of pastor at the First Congregational Church of Montclair, New Jersey. He retired from Union Theological Seminary in 1938. He died April 6, 1953.
