The author, Christopher Holt, was born in Devon, England and spent many years in Australia. A novel in which Bronwyn Huguet sails in the 'Rarotonga' from Liverpool in 1946 with five-year-old Tristan to be reunited with her Australian husband Robert in Sydney. She does so with mixed feelings for he carries a shameful secret from his wartime service in the Merchant Navy. She encounters hostility and violence as the family unit breaks down due to Robert's alcohol addiction. Set in Sydney's northern suburbs in the years immediately following the Second World War.
