His daily life is regulated by an unvarying routine. During the week he commutes by train every morning from Asham to South Suburbia, where he works for a large insurance company, and back again in the evening. At weekends he visits the supermarket, cleans and tidies his modest house, attempts (without much success) to impose order on his garden, and either watches television or goes to the pub with friends. Every day he records in his diary the delays (or absence thereof) on his journey to and from work.
