Owens believe that this Defoe canon is grotesquely inflated. In Defoe De-Attributions they list 252 items in the standard Checklist of Defoe's writings by J.R. Moore which they regard as suspect, tracing in each case how the work first came to be ascribed to Defoe and offering reasons for distrusting the ascription.
