Size octavo, 9.25" tall, 286 pages. Marbled paper covered boards over maroon calf spine section with gilt titles to the spine, top page edge dyed maroon, maroon paste-downs and end-papers. With the acetate dust jacket as issued. Book condition very good plus to near fine, the maroon on the top page edge has faded, pages are toned otherwise clean throughout. Dust jacket condition very good plus, 3 small splits in the acetate at the folds. This run was printed using the pages from the first edition in a special binding. The Limitation statement reads; "This First Edition of The Year of the Scorpion is one of 75 numbered copies in a special binding and signed by the author" Number 63.

Michael Hartland is a pseudonym. It real life he was a spy master going up the ladder after being recruited at Cambridge. This is his fifth novel and concerns a spy ring run by the Chinese who pose a threat to the democratic movement (underground). An interesting book set in the future.

It is one of 75 signed and numbered copies. It also features an Appreciation by Eric Homberger, who considers Hartland's place in the spy fiction tradition. Spy writer Ted Allbeury also has an Appreciation. The book is new from stock.

A spy novel set in the near future involving Communist China. Hartland is one of the best espionage writers and resigned from his high-flying 'civil servant' job in Vienna to take up writing full time. Copies of this book were given to the then Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd and to the leaders of the Chinese democratic movement.
