This almost forgotten biplane fighter was the first of the Grumman built carrier fighters, its progeny would include the Wildcat, Hellcat, Bearcat, Tigercat, the Panther and Cougar and lead finally to the F14 Tomcat. As such it should be regarded as a key aircraft also for being the first USN fighter with a retractable undercarriage. A register covering the service histories or each of the twenty-seven aircraft built (BuNos 9350-9376) and contains details of crashes or final flights.
