Sexist jokes, Playboy magazine cartoons, and grafittied doodles are the stuff of his paintings. Or rather, all of these icons of mass culture are the materials that Prince recycles and processes in order to make his own artworks. Re-photographed, fragmented, layered, and copied down, their original format irreversibly if subtly altered, they are transformed into works of high art. Withdrawn from an institutional library whose name is rubber-stamped on the front free endpaper and title page of each volume, with a bar code label still affixed to the rear paste-down of each. There is a bit of staining and adhesive residue left from the removal of labels at the foot of each spine, and a label to the reverse foot of the slipcase which is also a bit worn at the edges. A label is crossed out but still affixed to the front cover of the staple-bound book of essays, with the same rubber-stamp on the title page. Else, each binding is tight with minimal wear to the edges and corners. No other internal markings are noted.
