Professor Dinu has studied historical records and votive paintings in more than 230 churches that are located in all places of Wallachia and Moldavia, reviving the world of the Phanar and the Romanian lands of the time. On the images of this book are depicted the faces of some of the protagonists of 18th-century history (rulers, great burghers, archbishops), but also soldiers, merchants, craftsmen and smallholders, shepherds and clergymen of inferior rank. Phanariotes were the Orthodox aristocrats that used to line in the suburb of Phanari at Constantinople. During the 17th and 18th centuries they ruled the regions of Wallachia and Moldavia.
