Denmark 1982. Rørbye (1803-48) was the only Danish painter of the Golden Age who ventured to travel beyond Italy. The painting in Aarhus, dated 1846, is based on drawings and watercolours made on location in Greece and Turkey and on two oil-sketches from Italy. During his stay in Istanbul from December 20,1835 to February 1, 1836, he succeeded in making numerous sketches, but none in oil. The rich light and splendid colouring therefore must be the artists own contribution to the composition. His essay views the monuments of Istanbul as gigantic, romantic ruins of Constantinople., Danish/English Summary, Year1982, Illust. B/W32, Illust. Color1, ISBN 8798105752, Code 5662.
