In 1873 the magnificent Illustrations of China and Its People in four volumes appeared - the result of his work in that then remote and fascinating country. Now regarded as the first photographic travelogue of any kind to be published, the expensive limited edition has remained largely unknown and unseen. He spent ten years in the Far East and the original four volume set is considered by many to be the first photographic travelogue of any kind. There are very faint shadows from the dust jacket flaps on the pages opposite them at the beginning and end of the book. The binding is tight and there is barely noticeable tanning throughout.
