Yuan and Ming Blue and White Wares from Jiangxi Tapa dura - 2002

The present catalogue brings together important material for the understanding of one of China's most brilliant innovations -- that of porcelain with cobalt underglaze decoration, otherwise known as 'blue & white' china. In recent years there have been major advances in this field of study, both as a result of archaeological work undertaken in and around Jingdezen, the center of production of such wares for over 600 years, and also the recovery of large hoards of ancient Chinese ceramics from trade vessels sunken in past dynasties. The present catalogue illustrates and describes some 140 vessels, dating from the Yuan to late Ming periods, originating both from Imprerial ateliiers and folk & trade productions.
