Twenty-six accredited war correspondents covered the campaign, and nearly half of them wrote books about it, in most cases while the war was ongoing and events were still fresh. Government officials censored these accounts, and claimed the authors were misinformed and sensationalist. Historians, on the other hand, have criticized the same accounts for expressing undue optimism, suggesting that the writers presented an unrealistic view of what had taken place in an effort to…

Singapore: NUS Press, 2017. Paperback. New. The twenty-six accredited war corespondents covering the British retreat from Burma, the longest in British military history, had quite a task on their hands. They were dealing with a catastrophe which they had never faced before, but wanted to submit accurate reports that would not be cut to shreds by the censors. Most historians consider the reports to have been generally over optimistic, so here Wood examines what was published to determine their accuracy and impact. 206 pages Weight 0.6kg.
