London: Macmillan, 1903. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 6" by 4". Not Stated. A collection of essays by founder of 'The Spectator' magazine, Joseph Addison. Edited by English historian, John Richard Green. Green began a religious career in the church and served various cures in London before turning to writing. He wrote several historical works including 'A Short History of the English People'. There are over eighty essays to this volume including Addison's 'Sir Roger De Coverley' series, his Court essays from the Tatler and several more humorous subjects such as humours of the town, the country and fashion. Addison was an essayist, poet, playwright and politician. He wrote several political pieces commissioned by the government and was Under-Secretary of State for some time. London: Macmillan and Co., 1906. Reprint, a volume in Macmillan's Golden Treasury Series. 16 cm x 11 cm, publisher's dark blue cloth, pp. xxiviii, (378), + (2) pp. catalogue for the Golden Treasury series; portrait of Addison in centre of title page. This volume bears the ownership signature of classical scholar Charles Norris Cochrane, (1889-1945), author of "Christianity and Classical Culture", 1940. George [Parkin] Grant considered "Christianity and Classical Culture" to be "the most important book ever written by a Canadian". Harold Innis referred to it as "the first major Canadian contribution to the intellectual history of the West". Here, Cochrane has made five brief references to the text in pencil on the rear pastedown endpaper, and an ink note to at least one page. Scratch to front cover (6 cm long), else a very good copy. .
