Corners bumped and boards show modest edge and corner wear. Binding tight, this copy was ex-library with all pockets and indications from board endpapers removed save ink 3089 on front endpaper and remnants of a pocket to rear endpaper. A very nice copy overall with no stampings or page edge markings whatsoever. .

The Vermont Brigade, a part of the Sixth Corps served under the command of Major General Phillip H. Sheridan, commander of the Army of the Shenandoah. The author was a battalion commander in the Eleventh Vermont, a regiment of the hard fighting Brigade. At just one engagement, the Battle of the Wilderness, Vermont experienced its worst day of the war; 1,000 men were killed or wounded from the 1st Vermont Brigade alone. One in eight of the casualties resulting in the battle was by this brigade, which was one of 32 brigades on the Union side. Original brown cloth with gilt Greek cross, the brigade insignia on front cover and very legible gilt spine lettering. Original moss-green coated endpapers. 3 maps, including the frontispiece. Laid in is a four-page fact sheet from Petersburg National Military Park, with a centerspread map showing Federal and Confederate lines at Petersburg. 7.75" x 5" Walker served as a battalion commander, 11th Regiment, Vermont Infantry Volunteers.
