Stevenson and Francis Osborn; other memoirs were also employed in describing the regiment's several campaigns along the South Atlantic coast" [Nevins I, 153]. From the library of Richard J. Sommers. Dr. Sommers was a military historian at the U.S. Army Military History Institute. Sommers authored a number of books on the Civil War, notably The Siege at Petersburg, and taught for 44 years.

The author, a veteran of the Civil War, states...."This is not a history of the war, seldom generalizing, never moralizing nor discussing what might or what ought to have been, but always confining itself to what the officers and men of this regiment saw, said, thought and, above all, did." The book offers a listing of officers(commissioned and non-commissioned) the names of those within each company, those wounded, died or who survived along with a listing of men who enlisted but for all sorts of reasons were rejected, mostly because of bodily weakness or they simply deserted. A very good copy bound in blue cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt, wear to spine ends and corners.

Blue cloth hardcover with gilt title on the front cover and spine. Gilt illustrated regimental badge located bottom of the spine. Light shelf wear and soil to the blue cloth. Light edge wear to the cloth extremities. Previous owner name written on the front blank end sheet. Binding is sturdy and very clean inside. Regimental roster and index located in back. (Captain in Company I and Member of Regimental Committee on History) to an enlisted member of Company B. dated Jan 30, 1908. 2nd is a note in pencil about the presentation. The third is a note about the original owners death in 1918. Hardcover with No Dust Jacket (as issued). Boards [blue cloth with gold gilt lettering and design] with shelf wear, bumped at corners and spine ends with minor fraying. Small (less than dime sized) Dust soil to page edges. Text pages unmarked. Binding with no separations. Frontis and other full page plates have protective tissue paper still attached. Very nice solid copy.
