Pages are moderately tanned and thumbed at the edges, with moderate foxing. Binding has remained firm. Boards have been moderately rub worn. Noticeable shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a little frayed Spine ends are crushed, with noticeable splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Featuring a number of plates, including a frontispiece. Charlotte Maria Tucker (1821-1893) was an English children's writer and missionary. She grew up in London, but dedicated her later life to charitable works in India. Her writing encompasses adventure, romance, oriental tales, and stories of domestic life. 'The Rambles of a Rat', first published in 1857, is regarded as one of her most imaginative works. (DNB). In a modern half leather binding, with marbled paper coverings, and gilt pages. Externally, fine. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the frontispiece and title page are detached but present. Light browning prominent to page edges, with occasional small spots and marks.
