Exterior shows rubbing and some soiling and edges and corners show running and bumping as well. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues. Pages are toned due to age and some foxing is present. Front end page shows an 1890 gift inscription and some faint penciling along the top that has been erased. Rear pastedown and end page shows of light spot about 2 inches down from the top.

Spine ruffled at head and foot, covers dusty, interior clean, fox spotting to early leaves. This edition published with a 4 page letter from John Charles Fremont printed in the front.

Heavy pencil underling in many parts with underlining mostly rubbed out. Cracks at pp. 26 and 142. These are just some of the more pronounced faults in an aged volume with many defects but which is nevertheless a perfectly serviceable reading copy. 521pp. complete.
