Arnold may have begun with these good intentions, but he ends up reinforcing the Anglo-Saxon national character as Knox had seventeen years earlier. Arnold specifically poses the Anglo-Saxon against the Celt, citing the Celt's sentimental nature, artistic and poetic achievements, sensuality, and love of bright colors as admirable qualities of the race.
