London: William Pickering, 1825. Complete set of sixteen volumes bound into seventeen books, the final volume being divided into two separate bindings. Full British tan calf leather with dual spine labels in brown, slighlty raised spine bands decorated in gilt, all edges speckled red, frontis engraving in volumes I, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII, folding facimile document in volume IX, books about 8.75 inches tall. Very well kept set with only light wear to extremities, some crackles to spine labels (stabilized) and a tiny chip to one label, good hinges, firm text blocks, folding plate, frontis engravings and adjacent title pages foxed, pages clean, small name stamp to upper corner inside each cover, no other names or markings.. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Leather worn along the extremities esp at the spine. Volume I & 16 have some chipping at the joints and the crown of the spine lightly chipped. No ownership marks present. Foxing present. Text is free of marks, binding tight and solid. Bacon is credited as founder of systematic scientific thinking for the English speaking world and, with Descartes in France, stands as one of the most important scientific thinkers before Newton. "His pronouncement 'I have taken all knowledge to be my province' is the motto of his work.... Bacon made no contributions to science itself, but his insistence on making science experimental and factual, rather than speculative and philosophical, had powerful consequences." Gilt-blocked red and green leather labels to spines, with raised bands and compartments uniformly tooled in gilt. Single gilt-lined border to panels. Spine bands are slightly worn as with age. Hinges are starting in places, particularly vols. 1, 6 & 10. Light surface marks to panels. Panel edges are somewhat dulled and rubbed. Light foxing around prelims and terminals of vols. Remains particularly well-preserved overall; tight, bright, clean and strong. Provenance: From the library of T. H. H.
