Complete with 25 black & white engravings. A few spots of foxing near the image area of a few plates. The first several pages and plates are loose, with minor chipping, tearing, and browning to edges, not affecting images. The bottom edge of all pages and plates with minor staining. This stain, though light, comes close to the image area on the final five plates..

London: Virtue/NY: Virtue, Emmins, [1840]. This is four (of five) divisions of American Scenery; Division IV is lacking. In addition to being issued in parts, the work was issued in clothbound divisions containing part of the text, and 24 plates apiece. Binding is the original plum blind-stamped cloth, spines designed and lettered in gilt, both covers designed in gilt with an image of a native archer. Pale yellow coated end papers. Some mild chipping at the spine ends, some foxing to margins, but plates are clean. The first few leaves of Division I are loose. Divisions I and V contain the decorative title pages for the work; at the end of Division V are bound the preface, the printed title pages, the contents and lists of engravings, and two leaves of ads (which include an ad for American Scenery: "Now publishing, to be completed in Thirty Parts at One Shilling, or in Divisions, 7s. 6d., cloth gilt"). London: George Virtue, [1839 - 1842].. Sixteen plates by Bartlett, engraved by Cousen, Brandard, Willmore, others. These are proofs on India paper, colored, on white stock measuring 11 x 8.5 inches, mounted on larger sheets of different stock which measure 17 x 11.5 inches. These are proofs before letters, bearing only the artist and engraver names in the lower margin, but no titles. the larger sheets are uniformly tanned, with occasional foxing and some stains to margins, a few with short tears in margins and wear to edges. Images are almost all in fine, clean condition, and all are colored. Titles are provided in a miniscule hand at the very bottom corner of the larger sheets, and again on the rear, sometimes with an associated page number. Most are of New York State. Good. 2 volumes, quarto, full contemporary black full grained calf with blind embossing and gilt floral decorations, good plus set, all engravings (120 plus title pages) present, some light wear to joints and corners, front inner hinges show cracking, contents good to very good with most plates showing some degree of foxing. Plate of Mount Holyoke has minor dampstain. Handsome set.

Contemporary black morocco, gilt extra, a.e.g., silk endpapers. Minor shelf wear. Foxing to a few plates, light tanning to some leaves, more pronounced in second volume. Near fine, an elegant copy. Bartlett's most famous work. He visited Canada and the United States on four separate occasions, and the illustrations show many of the principal cities of North America as well as the most famous scenic vistas of the day. The majority of the views are in New York and New England, but Bartlett went as far north as the White Mountains and as far south as Virginia. He found Niagara and the Hudson Valley most suitable for landscape. There are city views in Washington, Saratoga, Boston, New Haven, Baltimore, Rochester, Philadelphia, and New York, among others.
