Elliott's "last cruise, made in 1835-38 as commander-in-chief of the Mediterranean Squadron, was marked by many exhibitions of good will to the numerous potentates whom he visited in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Within the squadron, however, there was much discord and he arrived home with several disgruntled subalterns. They preferred charges against him-- thirteen in all-- some of which now seem ludicrous. Jackson's administration had been succeeded by one much less friendly to the commodore and he was found guilty and sentenced to suspension from the navy for four years..." DAB. FIRST EDITION.
