The cover is scuffed, marked and worn about all edges and corners. The spine is of library imposed cloth tape. The binding is strong. Inside, the front and end papers are tatty. The frontispage is absent. The early pages have some wear. In purple cloth covered boards with silver lettering on front and spine, top edge gilt (boards rubbed at edges, frayed and cracked at base of spine, corners rounded, a few marks). Embossed stamp on front free endpaper, previous owner's name on next page, a little faint, occasional spotting. Rear endpaper has corner crease. The hard to find1895 third edition of English explorer, archaeologist and author James Theodore Bent's account of his exploration and excavations in northern Zimbabwe, Mashonaland, in 1891. Bent hoped to discover details about the early history of East Africa but his conclusions have been largely rejected but subsequent researchers. Small 8vo.

Archaeological investigations in the Mashonaland region of Zimbabwe, including the first detailed western account of the medieval city Great Zimbabwe. His book was "enthusiastically received...but both his methods and his conclusions came in for trenchant criticism from professional archaeologists and other scholars. His amateur methods damaged sites and artefacts...His removal of the best examples of the famous soapstone birds at Great Zimbabwe has been particularly criticized. The blue boards have wear, scuffing, marks all about from shelving, storage, handling. The spine has wear about the seams, some areas of fading. The spine and boards are steady and sure. Within, the contents are a little aged. The early pages are flushed with foxing, the other pages are flecked, speckled with foxing throughout. Please note that the illustration at page 89 is missing.
