Maps, illustrations including a full page woodcut of Adam and Eve with the Tree of Knowledge. Recent period style blind panelled mottled calf binding. Ths spine with raised bands. One leaf (I Luke) in good facsimile and 4Qv with a small corner repair in facsimile affecting two lines of text and sidenotes. Some signs of use and occasional edge tears repaired. London [Amsterdam]: Imprinted by the Deputies of Christopher Barker,, 1599. A handsome Puritan bible A Bible probably printed for the use of English puritans in the Low Countries in the early 17th century. The metrical psalms are included, with a separate title and register. The Geneva version, translated by William Whittingham and other Marian exiles, went through more than 70 editions between 1560 and 1640. Although folio versions were produced for pulpit use, this was primarily a household Bible, typically printed as here in small, manageable quartos. Geneva Bibles with 1599 imprints have a complex bibliographical history. Herbert identifies at least eight distinct editions, and notes that "the nominal date, 1599, is probably untrue in almost every case; they were apparently published at different times in Amsterdam and Dort and adopted by Barker" (p. 115). London: Robert Barker, 1607. Full Calf. Very Good+. 2 parts in one volume, folio (13 x 8 1/2 in.; 330 x 216 mm). Double column text in roman type, 63 lines to the full column, engraved general title tinted by hand in rose pink and light blue wash, woodcut headpiece and small ornament on New Testament title-page with continuous register but separate foliation, full-page woodcut of Adam and Eve in Eden facing Genesis, 31 woodcut text illustrations, diagrams, and maps, woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces; foliation errors as typical; scattered staining throughout, tape repaired tear on G2 cutting into side-notes, and another on Ffff2 repaired with older cellotape. Contemporary calf over beveled wooden boards, old sueded calf spine nailed to front and rear covers (this done a very long time ago); catches perished, but still a most impressive looking object and a quite decent copy, overall, of the Geneva Bible in Folio format in a contemporary binding.
