The book is in good to very good condtion with some fading to the lower edge of the front cover, good hinges, firm text block, clean pages with a name neatly written on the front free endpaper, a few notes on the rear free endpaper, no other markings. The mylar protected dustjacket is not priceclipped [5.00] and has some chipping to the spine ends, scuff from sticker removal at the upper corner of the front panel, edgewear.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Burgundy-coloured cloth, gilt lettering on spine (slight sunning spine, fore-edges), w/ d.j. (very minor shelfwear), from the library of Herbert Gray Hills, of Hills Brothers Coffee, Piedmont, California. First edition of this excellent biography of a fervent southern abolitionist whose five sons eventually all served in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Perhaps best known was her son, William W. Blackford, who served under Jeb Stuart during the Civil War, whose memoir was published posthumously in 1945.
