Orange illustrated plates throughout. Binding remains firm. Pages and plates have light tanning and foxing throughout. Water staining to some pages, text remains readable. Boards have heavy shelf-wear with bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over. Heavy tears to spine. Fraying to cloth to edges. Heavy staining to rear board.

Large octavo, viii, 112, [16] (publisher's catalogue) pages plus 40 tinted lithographs (including the title page). Later buckram sunned on the spine and slightly flecked and marked; front bottom corner bumped, impacting slightly on the first few leaves of the book; leading edge of the last leaf of text a little chipped (but now stabilised); title leaf a little foxed, with minimal light marginal foxing to a few plates; trifling marks to a few leaves; a very good copy with the plates overall very crisp and clean. The plates in the text do not count in the pagination, but as we included the lithographic title leaf in the preliminaries total to make up the required number of pages, we suspect this rebound copy is possibly lacking a half-title or a printed title leaf.

Dark blue cloth elaborately decorated in gilt on the spine and upper board. All edges gilt. Hinges sound. No ownership inscription and very little foxing. Pp.viii,112; viii,136. 79 double-tinted plates + 2 illustrated title pages. Lacks plate 37 in Vol. II and a few plates are out of order. The plates are"from drawings taken on the spot by William Simpson." Photographs available on request. A very good copy apart from the missing plate.

The printed titles calls for 80 plates, the numbering in vol. 2 is 1-41 (less no 37), in vol. 1 the plates are numbered 2-40 and the frontispiece-plate is unnumbered). First edition of both volumes.

The scarce complete first edition of the first and second series of George Brackenbury's thorough description of specific battles, camp life, hospital conditions and churches during the Crimean War, with the second volume discussing the historical impact and the origins of the war. Illustrated with forty tinted lithograph plates, including pictorial title page, to each volume. Eighty plates in total. Collated, complete.The illustrations to this work were taken on the spot by William Simpson, and were originally designed to illustrate his 'Seat of War in the East'.
