Philadelphia: M. Thomas, 1818. Hardcover. Good +. 6 x 9 in. 79 pp., plus appendix. Original printed paper boards. Frontis of fold-out map with hand-colored borders. Condition is GOOD+ ; there is some water damage to the lower right corners of the text and endpapers, with some small holes to the title pg, but mostly damp-spotted, decreasing in size further in the text. The map has a small tear at the join to the ffep, but otherwise is very good, with slight mildew spots in that one corner. The text is bright and perfectly readable. No odor. US Hist. RGR.

Philadelphia, 1818.. 81,[1]pp. Folding frontispiece map. Original printed boards. Front board nearly detached, rubbed and dampstained, ex-lib. with shelf labels, bookplate and library information adhered to front pastedown. Map a bit foxed, repair on verso of tear at gutter of map with no loss. Internally very good, untrimmed. Second edition, revised, with a different map. "Emphasizes Philadelphia's strategic position for trade with the rising West" - Howes. The map of Pennsylvania, "reduced with permission from Reading Howells [sic] Map, by Samuel Lewis," is a detailed representation of the state, with rivers handcolored in blue, and canals handcolored in red. Additional material not present in the first edition includes brief sketches of countries which had been markedly improved by canal and river navigation, among them China, Holland, France, Russia, England and Spain. Philadelphia, 1818.. 48,[1]pp. plus three double-sheet maps, partially handcolored. Modern half morocco. Some light foxing, else very good. "Emphasizes Philadelphia's strategic position for trade with the rising West" - Howes. Howes makes no mention of the maps which are present in this first edition; neither does Sabin, and his collation is wrong. They illustrate the headwaters of the principal rivers of Pennsylvania.
