Lacks title-page (supplied in photocopy). Small repair to the page iii-iv, affecting a few words of text. Two plates with marginal corner tears, otherwise a very good copy. The English Art of Cookery is a cookery book of English cuisine by the tavern cook Richard Briggs ("many Years Cook at the Globe Tavern, Fleet-street, the White-Hart Tavern, Holborn, now at the Temple Coffee-house."), first published in 1788. Rubbed to extremities, lightly browned throughout, occasional light foxing, light stain to top margin starting about a hundred pages from the end and getting progressively heavier, though not affecting text. Piece missing from fore edge margin of a2 and O5, this catching a couple of letters to reverse but no loss of sense. With twelve plates as called for. Contemporary sheep newly rebacked, single pin-hole worm trace in the lower corner of the first 29 leaves, the same in the upper corner of the last 94 leaves, the final few leaves with a fine trace of worming in the fore-edge margin, occasional foxing, overall a very good copy, the worming quite unobtrusive. *With this ink inscription on the front paste-down - 'The Gift of Mrs. Wilkinson of Plas Grono to Mary Peters of Minera July Anno Domini 1804'. The donor was most likely the wife of JOHN WILKINSON (1728 - 1808), a pioneer of the modern, mechanized iron trade. He was born at Clifton, Cumbria, in 1728, educated at the Dissenting Academy of Caleb Rotherham at Kendal and worked with his father Isaac, in the family iron-works, from c.1748.
