Foulis, Publisher, c. 1908 Hard cover chapbook, 12mo, measuring 3 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches), in brown jute buckram, blocked brown titles to front and spine, with a color lithographed scene applied of two lovers romantically enjoying a moonlight gondola ride upon the Grand Canal of Venice, with St. Mark's Basilica in the background. The remaining illustrations are tipped onto gray card. Frontispiece and hand-lettered title page are on subsequent, rather than facing pages (as was usual.) Printed by Neil and Company, Edinburgh upon heavy, laid paper. While undated, the sole T.N. Foulis Company address at Frederick Street, Edinburgh indicates this was an early imprint, since later issues of the same series also list the newly expanded premises in London as early as 1909, so this is prior to that date. At each chapter head is a color illustration. Silk ribbon marker is laid in. There is fraying to the extremties, small chips to the spine edges. Brown leather (suade) paste-on titling "The Last Ride" gilt on leather on spine; bright gilt sheaf like floral emblem on front cover, with two stems and two (roses?) in top of stamped hour glass with 18 gilt emblems creating a small wave of what look like Chinese characters at top and bottom of hourglass design. Roycrofters stamp/ ghost visible at blank endpapers.

Vellum is soiled and bowed. Ties are present but worn. Endpapers are browned, foxing throughout. Ownership signiture on fly leaf in pencil.

Tie ends are torn, and are not long enough to tie together; cover is therefore bowed.

One of 940 copies specially hand-illumined copies, signed by Hubbard as well as the illuminator, Emma Johnson. Silk mauve front and rear paste-downs. Superbly presented with ten full-page illustrations by Henri Caruchet which are expertly hand-illumined by one of the Roycroft's artists. One of the more visually pleasing set of illustrations in all the Roycroft oeuvre. Warping of vellum covers, nice internally. One tie partially lacking, others foreshortened.

Browning's poem about the last ride with his mistress, is he dying or is he simply saying goodby knowing the relationship has come to and end? A beautiful copy bound by Harcourt bindery in full green morocco highly decorated in gilt, raised bands with compartments lettered and fully gilt decorated, full morocco doublures suptuously decorated in gilt, blue silk brocade free endsheets, all edges gilt, upper corner of front free silk endsheet with tiny wear. Nearly fine.

Signed on the colophon by Elbert Hubbard, and with an inscription by the illuminator, Frances Carmody. Designed by Samuel Warner. Illustrated throughout with hand-illumined art nouveau borders. The Last Ride was one of only two or three books printed on pure vellum by the Roycrofters. The present copy features a magnificent binding by Louis Kinder of turquoise levant with intersecting brown and black morocco onlays, bordered in gilt, sweeping across both covers, and a gilt tooled fern spray radiating out from the center, against a backdrop of gilt-tooled stars. Elaborately tooled vellum doublures carry the fern motif inside, where they form a horizontal plane that divides the doublures into four sections, decorated with gilt strapwork, at the center of which are four tooled devices: a pair of clasped hands, a pair of hearts pierced by an arrow, an hourglass… Leer más
