Map by Emanuel Bowen. Spine very worn and rubbed, corners lightly bumped and rubbed. Toning of margins of endpapers. The map has a little foxing and a very small hole at the edge (both outside the plate area), otherwise clean. Very good condition. An early edition of "An Account of the European Settlements in America" by Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797) the politician and philosopher. A married set in very good condition. Second edition, 1758, London. Original full leather boards. Volume 1 has a new spine (sometime in last 50 years) by Edward F. Gruver, Washington, DC. V.1 has bookplate and pencil notations of prior owner and booksellers, no other markings. The first four leaves after the map are loose at the bottom and remain attached at the top. Volume 2 has the original binding, no interior markings of any kind. Paginates: Volume 1: new blank, old blank, map, 4 leaves, 324, 5 leaves, old blank, new blank; Volume 2: blank, map, 6 leaves, 308, 1 blank (all original). See Howes B968; Hill 218/219; Field 206. Covers worn, rubbed , leather spines worn with chipping, volume 2 has label missing, also front cover detached. HOWES B-974. "Best contemporary account. Actually written by William Burke, but usually ascribed to his more famous kinsman who gave substantial help." While the covers and spine are battered and worn, the interiors are very good. Both folding maps are clean and bright. Ownership name "L. Pillars/1857" on fly leaves and title pages, otherwise clean. Ideal candidates for rebinding. Record # 382688

GB: R & J Dodsley, 1760. Contemporary full leather with small coronet above monogram in gold on front covers and near base of spines. "Archibald Douglas his book" written at top of pastedown (v1). Both vols have an old label stating "Ante-Room" on pastedown. Spines have raised bands between gold rules. Gold on burgundy title labels (VERY WORN). Endpapers and early and late leaves heavily browned at edges. No halftitles. Clean tight texts. Each volume has a folded map in text at pages 281 (1) and 293 (2). Folding map in each volume by Emanuel Bowen. Maps are clean and undamaged but are a little spotted. Hinges and joints are a little cracked but covers are holding reasonably well by strings. Bindings generally sound but a bit worn. Book is in good double plus condition with noticeable signs of wear and/or age. . 3rd Edition. Hardback. G++/No DW.

Front board of second volume detached, but present. Covers slightly bowed. Armorial bookplate and early 19th-century ownership signature on front paste down of each volume. Later bookplate on rear pastedown of each volume. Internally clean. Very good. The sixth edition, "with improvements." The authorship of this work, at least in terms of primary credit, still remains open, with William Burke (Edmund's cousin) and Richard Burke (his brother) frequently being given credit as collaborators. Burke himself told Boswell that he only "revised" it. Whomever the ultimate responsible party was, the work was nonetheless extremely popular, and was frequently reprinted and translated.
