A typewritten note tipped-in to the front-endpaper narrates the provenance of the book for its first 100 years.

Hardback, 1857, with 35 illustrations engraved by the brothers Dalziel, published by George Routledge and Co., London, 95 pages.
Measures around 8" by 6". Indigo cloth binding, patterning to boards and spine, gilt lettering and detail to front board and spine. Some scuffing, marking and discolouration in places but board colour and gilt still very visible. Signs of shelf-wear, bumped and torn corners and edges. Binding reasonably firm though a bit strained towards middle of book. Page edges gilt, a bit scuffed and marked but gilt detail still very vivid. Torn edge inside front of book suggests the FFEP might have been torn out. Some mild foxing throughout but otherwise page surfaces clean, no marginalia, underlining, etc. See pictures for further information

Thomas Campbell (27 July 1777 – 15 June 1844) was a Scottish poet chiefly remembered for his sentimental poetry dealing specially with human affairs. "Gertrude of Wyoming" is a romantic epic in Spenserian stanza composed by Campbell in 1809. The poem was well received, but not a financial success for its author. The setting of the poem is the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania and the massacre that occurred there on July 3, 1778. On that day, more than three hundred American Revolutionaries died at the hands of Loyalists and their Iroquois allies.
