Cheetham, notorious pamphleteer and journalist, edited the Democratic-Republicans' newspaper in New York, whose bitterly partisan politics involved Burr [then Jefferson's Vice President], Clinton, and Hamilton factions. Cheetham regularly attacked Burr, and does so here, saying that "there is about his actions a cunning, a sort of legerdemain, which, while it defies conclusive proof, eludes the most acute research." "[Cheetham] was the Editor of the AMERICAN CITIZEN, the organ of the Republican party in New York; he was fond of invective and merciless in his attacks upon Burr" - Tompkins. Cheetham was a Clintonian Republican and herein attacks Aaron Burr and his followers, with whom the Clintonians were struggling for state and national prominence.
