Churchill was a lineal descendant of the duke. Churchill had conceived the idea of writing the book by 1929, when the conservative defeat in the general election meant that he was no longer a government minister, giving him both spare time and the loss of his ministerial salary. His first act in preparing the book was to employ Maurice Ashley part-time for a salary of £300 per year to carry out research about Marlborough. First and final leaves with some offset toning from endpapers else contents are clean, bindings pleasantly aged with some very light wear only. A most attractive set, unusual to find in an old leather binding. Bound circa 1938, the set comprises books available at the time of binding; Vol 1 'Revised' ed.; Vol 2 'Reprinted' (i.e. Second Impression); Vols. 3 and 4 are First Printings.
