A 1.5 x 3 inch illustration of unknown origin is affixed to the upper outside corner of the front free end leaf, covering a portion of the map. Top hinge (internal) is just a little shaken. Dust jacket is present, but with multiple closed and open tears. Most of lettering and illustrations on jacket remain good. Jacket is now in a clear Brodart protective sleeve. . First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author dated at time of publication to his long time friend Val Cleaver. INSCRIBED or SIGNED copies of this book are rare. De-accessed from the B.I.S. with the B.I.S. bookplate on the f.p.d.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1957. Hardcover. Near Fine. First American edition. Spine slightly faded, else near fine without dustwrapper. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protégé, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley, who was the dedicatee of his first hardcover novel (*Islands in the Sky*): "To Ian and Elsa, with my very best wishes for your future happiness - and hoping that you'll be able to visit us here one day. Arthur, 13 March '59." Macauley was an award-winning *New York Times* journalist, who also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, *Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds!* (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of *Childhood's End* while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A splendid association copy, and not a book one usually finds signed by Clarke.
