It then passes on to the early airships, with special mention of the lennox Eagle (1835), and of Giffard’s ship (1852) which was the first to achieve some sort of controlled flight. It describes Tissandier’s airlift out of Paris in 1870 -- the first practical use of the air as a medium of transport -- and the work of Alberto Santos-Dumont, whose habit it was to tether his airships to the lamp-post outside his Paris house. With the passing of the years it shows Germany coming more and more prominently into the field, concentrating on rigid ships whilst France and Britain persisted with the non-rigid.
