LONDON: THE NONESUCH PRESS, 1927 Brown Cloth quarter binding with non parallel marbled paper covered boards and gilt titles to spine. 235 x 145 mm approx. 164 pp Colour frontis. No 1800 of the Limited Edition of 1,800 copies. The copy offered has an interesting provenance. There is a book plate of John Lowe to the front paste down and loosely laid in is a printed card with a cartoon in the style of Nicolas Bentley and initialed NB. Please see our images of the actual book offered for sale for further details and condition. The note on the card appears also to be printed rather than hand written. Good (Book- shelf wear and soiling to cloth and boards, offset browning to free end papers, book plate as above, top edge of book block dust soiled. No other notable defects).

William Cobbett complains about everyone, including Benjamin Franklin and various Philadelphia printers and booksellers, and defends himself against accusations that he was in the pay of the British while living in Philadelphia. In Good+ Condition: disbound; title page soiled; lightly stained and foxed throughout; separated between p. 26 and p. 27. Very scarce.

Contemporary gilt calf, spine gilt, leather label. Front hinge weak. Edgeworn. Otherwise just about very good. A contemporary volume of London editions of three famous Cobbett works. The first, THE BLOODY BUOY, styled on the titlepage as the third edition, is described by Pearl as "a lurid account of atrocities alleged to have been committed by the revolutionaries in France..." - Pearl. The second title, in a first London edition, is Porcupine's autobiography, and a chief source for details of his childhood and early career. The last work, A BONE TO GNAW, is in a later London edition (after the first American of 1795), published by John Wright, who added A ROD FOR THE BACKS OF THE CRITICS, "by Humphrey Hedgehog," which is described by Pearl as "a labored attack on the British reformers and the hostile reviewers of Cobbett's OBSERVATIONS.… Leer más
