Romae (Rome): In Collegio Urbano De Propaganda Fide, 1834. Leather. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 542pp. Text in Latin. Ex-library, bound in quarter calf over marble paper covered boards. Exterior admits to fairly heavy wear, including several medium bumps to extremities of volume, as well as light to medium wear to remainder of covers, including worn areas to spine and back cover where stickers used to be. Title hand-written to spine remains clear and easy to read. Approximately 15 pages admit to pencil and ink-notes, though this is minimal to most pages and not at all offensive on the few pages that admit to a few more marks and notes. Approximately 40 pages admit to some largely mild degree of creasing, with a little heavier creasing to fore-edges of approximately 20 pages. Small holes and tears to a small number of pages, with one leaf admitting to a tear that extends to text, though this only presents a challenge to reading a few letters. Binding sound. 4º. 284pp. Bound in a lovely 18th century half vellum bindig with pretty patterned paper over boards. Soine with handwritten title and ornamentations in ink. Inner hinges very neatly restored (barely noticeable and original end-papers preserved). Old ink-annotation to pasted-down front end-paper. An excellent copy, also internally in very nice condition with only light occasional brownspotting. Large Aldine printer's device (dolphin and anchor) to title-page and lovely woodcut initials, paginated with Arabic numerals.
The very rare first reprint of the first edition - i.e. the second overall printing and the first 4to-edition - of the canons and decrees of the council of Trent, one of the most significant series of meetings in Christian history. This milestone in Western culture and religion arguably constitutes the most important work printed in the history of the Catholic Church.

EXTREMELY RARE 1564 FIRST PRINTING of the Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent, one of the most important publications in the history of the Catholic Church; printed by Paulus Manutius and Aldus the Younger of the Aldine Press and the request of Pope Pius IV. The Council of Trent (1545-63), was "highly important for its sweeping decrees on self-reform and for its dogmatic definitions that clarified virtually every doctrine contested by the Protestants. Despite internal strife, external dangers, and two lengthy interruptions, the council played a vital role in revitalizing the Roman Catholic Church in many parts of Europe. Pius IV confirmed the council's decrees in 1564 and published a summary of its doctrinal statements; observance of disciplinary decrees was imposed under sanctions.
