Coxe was chair of materia medica and pharmacy at the University of Pennsylvania in 1818; he was "Active in the field even before joining the University, he is regarded by many as the father of pharmacy in Philadelphia ... It lists the nature of hundreds of medical ingredients and gives recipes for their use.
