Tells the tale of a corrupted paradise, the Florida peninsula town of Garden Hills, which once flourished as the site of the world's largest phosphate mine and now is nearly abandoned, decrepit. Crews draws great characters here; Fat Man, the town's impotent king, a Metrecal addict and frightened conservative, Dolly, the town's queen, its seductive virgin. They both battle for control of the land. This is the author's rendition of 'Silent Spring'. 212pp.

With a fabulous full-page INSCRIPTION from Crews to Don Kaufmann: "Winter Park, Summer of 1975. For Don Kaufmann -- Here is my best -- the one I love the most -- because I am nearest to what I love the most and that which I find the most mysterious --I can only wish you to know what I do not know. Harry Crews." The late Don Kaufmann was a close friend of Crews, a scholar and a noted collector of American literature whose collection was sold in two featured Heritage Auctions recently. Few faint foxing spots top edge and some rubbing on the edges else a tight, near fine book in a bright, fine price-intact ($5.95) DJ. Scarce with such a great inscription..
