Kettle is a determined, pugnacious sea-going hero (or, perhaps, anti-hero); "larger than life in every way but his physical stature" (on-line review)..

With a typed letter, signed by the author dated 1937, recounting how he had been on the Windward taking relief to the Jackson-Harmsworth expedition at Vardo. He had left the ship at Vardo, and it had later retrieved Nansen from his Fram expedition.
