Glorieta, New Mexico: The Rio Grande Press, Inc., 1968. 1968 Reprint . Hard Back. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 6" x 9. 119 Pages. A Rio Grande Classic first published in 1893. The endpapers at the front and back is a replica of an old railroad map circa 1890. This is a basic source book of American history and is one aspect of American history that proved truth is stranger than fiction. Historically flagellation began in Egypt and is a penance condensed. Yet as all flagellation to-day is voluntary, and as Christ never struck himself a blow nor ever laid any penance upon himself it is the opposite to any true imitation of Jesus. It is a strange practice indeed. One participant was observed striking himself a blow for the cow he stole and another for the cow he intends to steal.

Rio Grande Press reproduction of the 1893 exposé on the extremist religious rites of the Cofradia de Nuestro Padre Jesus, commonly known as "Los Penitentes." A verbatim facsimile, with all original type, text, pagination, and illustrations preserved, plus an appendix at the back containing numerous nineteenth century photographs of Penitente flagellations, processions, and a crucifixion. As New, issued without dust jacket. A pristine copy.

First edition, wrappered issue. 12mo, measuring 5¾" x 7". 59pp. With a frontispiece portrait of Darley and nine illustrations of various practices of the "penitentes." Lacking the cover and lower wrap detached with soiling and a few small chips, thus good only; the interior is bright and fine. "The first full account of the unusual sect of Penitentes" (Howes D68). Illustrations of flagellant practices include "The Picador using the Pedernal on The Penitente," "The Celador punishing a Criminal," "The Crucifiction," and "The 'Reata' torture on La Costilla in '66." Another illustration shows the artist and illustrator in a horse-drawn carriage passing a group of working penitentes. The author is noted on the title page as being "Apostle of the Colorado Mexicans.

Black and white photographic portrait of the author preceding title page. Illustrated title page plus 8 other full page illustrations.
