Spine ends curled with bumped corners and light rubbing to cover edges. Former owner's bookplate and short note on front paste down. No other writing. Binding is undamaged but feels a little loose. Jacket is worn with several tears including a tape repair at the bottom of the spine; also price clipped but otherwise complete. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 382 pages .

Stapled to the rear flap of the jacket is a newspaper clipping, apparently from Manhattan, Kansas, hometown of the author and the fictional setting for the novel, renamed New Boston.

Author's full inscription on blank front free end leaf reads "Just a book to / remind you of your / friends in Manhattan / who miss you very / much. / The Authors." Book remains tight and generally clean. There is a little darkening along the bound edge of the title pages partially shadowing the inscription. Dust jacket is a bit soiled, and shows numerous tears. Lettering and images remain intact and jacket is now in a clear Brodart protective sleeve.

The volume is bumped at the spine ends, has a faint discoloration at the top of the rear panel (corresponding to same on jacket), and the endpapers and pastedowns are lightly toned. The uniformly corner clipped dust jacket (price of $3.95 is intact), protected in a sleeve, is rubbed and lightly chipped at the spine ends (to 1 depth of 1/8" on the crown), and has light moisture stains on the spine crown and top edge of the rear panel.
