Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. The first edition credited the work's protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents. It was published under the full title The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. London: Craddock and Joy, 1813. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo. 242pp; list of plates, 2 pp. of adverts. Engraved frontispiece illustration and fifteen other copper engraved plates. The plates were originally made for Tabart & Co, and are dated August 1805.. Tabart had published an edition, which wasn’t dated with 16 copper plates. Presumably Craddock bought the plates and reissued them under his own imprints in 1813. Bound in the original morocco backed boards with plain grey paper covered boards. Some moderate wear; binding a little rubbed, some shelfwea, one engravings has some juvenile colour wash-see photo. A charming children's version of the classic adventure, uncommon in the original boards. . 'The first English novel', most likely based on the true story of the Scottish castaway Alexander Selkirk. Cohn, 701. Listed in 'The Novel 100' (Burt, 2004), also`in The Observer; All-Time 100 Best Novels (2003).

Some edge wear and small pieces of the coloured paper missing from front cover (see photo). Brown cloth faded at bottom half of spine. Hinges cracked and reinforced with white hinge tape. Pages and Illustrations generaly in nice condition, only an occasional small patch of browning, mostly marginal. Please ask if you would like more pictures or information. Profusely illustrated with an illustration to each page plus bright plates Tissue guards present. Lacks rear free endpaper and rear hinge is visible but sound, boards worn and rubbed especially to edges, pages slightly foxed otherwise a sound copy of a very attractive and scarce children's edition of Robinson Crusoe.
