London: Chapman and Hall., 1839.. First edition. Octavo. Handsomely bound for Henry Sotheran Ltd. in early twentieth-century half brown calf over red-brown linen boards, the spine with five raised bands and titles in gilt. Top edge gilt. Pale marbled endpapers. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece, with tissue-guard, and 39 further engraved plates by Halbot Knight Browne (aka 'Phiz'). Lacking the half-title. A very good copy, the binding square and tight. The contents with spotting to the plates (heavier to some), two plates with minor tears neatly repaired with tissue verso, and a stain to the bottom margin of one plate, are otherwise in good order. The first edition in book form of Dickens's third novel, originally issued in parts between 1838 and 1839, smartly bound for Sotheran's of London during the early twentieth century.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1839. [Classic Fiction] FIRST EDITION, bound from mixed issue parts. Octavo (22 x 15cm), pp.xvi; 624. With 39 engraved plates by Phiz, and a frontispiece portrait of the author by Maclise. This copy does not have "visiter" for "sister" on p.123 line 17, but it does have "latter" for "letter" on p.160, 6 lines up. The frontispiece and first four plates have the imprint of Chapman and Hall, which indicates that they come from the 'earliest issues of the monthly parts' (Hatton and Cleaver, p.134). Bound with both the half-title and one green cover (no.IX) from the original parts to preliminaries. Recently re-bound with a cream paper-covered spine, a plain paper title label, and contemporary blue paper-covered boards. All edges untrimmed. Masonic bookplate of James Barr Lamb to front pastedown. Repairs to hinges. Extremely heavy spotting and browning to plates (more so than usual), but text generally quite clean. London: Chapman and Hall, 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Browne, Hablot K. ['Phiz"]; Meadows, Kenney. First printing, mixed state, octavo size, 707 pp. This was writer Charles Dickens' (1812-1870) third novel, widely anticipated and loved. He is often considered the greatest of the Victorian era novelists, blending drama and comedy into compelling stories. In this novel Dickens explores the social issues that his works are known for, such as, harsh boarding schools, the privilege of royal title and wealth, social customs of the day and the plight of the working class. The plot focuses on the hardships courageously navigated by young Nicholas Nickleby after his father passes away. The extra illustrations provided were drawn by Joseph Kenny Meadows (1790 - 1874), best known for his drawings published in Punch magazine. He was a friend of Charles Dickens and several other writers of the period. These caricatures add a visual element to the characters depicted by Dickens [n.b. above…
