A lovely version of Dickens' classic Xmas tale complemented by the long-lost engravings done by French illustrator Dore for this story. 176 pages. First Printing in this format from 1996 (First, thus), this hardcover book has beige cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. Original Dust Jacket shows shelf wear, overall good condition. The point of this publication, supervised by Dan Malan, of The Classics Collector magazine, is the presence of 45 lost engravings by Gustave Dore along with 130 other Victorian illustrations. Dore did a fine job--his ghosts are the scariest, his poor the shabbiest, and his Scrooge the meanest among the examples on display--but it was a job for an ephemeral publication, not to be compared with the artist's independent projects. Front board features ornate blind-stamped borders. Very attractive. Bright gilded text block at all sides. Pages near fine. Vintage inscription at front pastedown: "Given to Marion, Christmas 1969, J. G." Features facsimile of the original title page and frontispiece from Chapman & Hall of 186 Strand in London. Bind good, square; hinges intact. Graced with the original charming illustrations in richly subdued colors and a few partial-page b&w designs by John Leech, as the first edition. Pages near fine, clean; few w/light fox. Features an introduction by Lionel Barrymore who protrated Scrooge in favorite motion picture. Facsimile signatures below dedication: "To the Memory of Charles Dickens. To Whom each in his separate sphere, two followers dedicate their efforts toward interpreting and perpetuating his great classic, A Christmas Carol, Everett Shinn, Lionel Barrymore." Wonderful two page spread at front and back endpapers of Philadelphia city street scene in the season with what appears to be the back of Scrooge bending into the middle of street players.
