Gutters are cracked and tender; the textblock feels nearly loose from the spine. Fraying to head and tail of spine. Biography of the abolitionist. Call number on the spine and inside front cover. City Library property stamp on title page and page 99. Accession number 56 is on page 99 and the inside back cover. Front and back hinges have been repaired with cloth tape. Edited by Ellis Paxson Oberholtzer, Ph. D. Black and white picture of John Brown with his signature on frontispiece. Tissue cover has a tear. Tanned shadow of previous card pocket on inside back cover and facing endpage. Small pieces of cloth missing at top and bottom of the spine. Gilt top edge. Bottom corners worn to board.

Hardcover, a beautiful example of this scarce biography in borderline fine condition. Blue cloth boards with gilt text on spine. Gilt is bright and cloth shows only minor spotting and handling with the exception of the rear board which has a loss to the cloth finish along the outside turn-in edge. There is also a faint bump in the cloth at the upper right corner. This is the reason why this book is not great as fine. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. This book came from the collection of Miss Sallie E. Robinson, who was a very prominent African-American from the Philadelphia area, and her signature appears on the front pastedown and the very last index page. Pages are clean and paper is bright.
