First published in 1821 by an anonymous author calling themselves a 'Real Paddy', this edition of Real Life in Ireland, was published in London in 1904. Commentators have observed that Real Life in Ireland was a natural continuation of Pierce Egan's (1772-1849) hilarious volumes on Life in London. Like Life in London, Real Life in Ireland was initially shunned by educated readers and even a quick glance at the language and misdeeds of the central characters, Brian Boru and Sir Shawn O'Doherty, reveal that such a publication may once have been able to cause and give offence. One page toned but legible. Bound in publisher's dark green cloth covered boards with black edge decorations to front and rear boards. Gilt spine title. Chipping to head and toe of spine. The head has been crudely glued, and the bottom edge corners worn through. Slightly weak to the front hinge. Owner's bookplate (Francis de Neufville Schroeder - author of works on Interior Design). London: Jones and Co., 1822. [Continuing the Title Page: "Exhibiting a Real Picture of Characters, Manners, &c. in High and Low Life, in Dublin and Various Parts of Ireland. Embellished with Humorous Coloured Engravings, From Original Designs by the most eminent Artists"] Although published anonymously, this is the work of Pierce Egan (1772-1849), who was extremely popular as a sports reporter of the time. Aside from the comprehensive titling effort, this is a prime example of an extended Paddy Joke, with the Irishman denigrated as a figure of fun. Egan himself was Irish, so perhaps he has some cover here. Nonetheless, the book has much to reccommend itself, particularly in the hand-coloured illustrations, of which Quercus counts eighteen. This is a Good only copy of the Third Edition. Held by all major collections in the UK, this is a scarce book in the Trade.
