Two engraved folding plates of table settings, and one folding plate of stove fires. Stated seventh edition. One of the most celebrated and popular of 18th century cookery books, placing the author in the same sphere as Hannah Glasse. In addition to her position as housekeeper to Lady Warburton, Raffald operated the Bull's Head Pub in Manchester, and the King's Head in Salford, both notable inns, helped found a newspaper, operated a confectionery shop and ran a cooking school. All this after having provided her husband, John Raffald, with many daughters (as many as sixteen depending on your source). Among the interesting recipes is one "To spin a Silver Web for covering Sweet Meats", and "Directions for a Grand Table." Full calf, original covers, later rebacked, raised bands, spine in six panels. Lightly browned and lightly foxed throughout, folding plates creased and slightly chipped to edges. Signed by the author at the start of the text (ensuring authenticity). Elizabeth Raffald (1733-81), cook and author, was initially a housekeeper, later marrying and settling in Manchester having sixteen daughters in eighteen years. Initially a confectioner, later a publican, "she was a woman of much shrewdness, tact and strength of will, and had, with other accomplishments, a good knowledge of French. She gave lessons to young ladies in cookery and domestic economy ... R. Baldwin, the London publisher, is reported to have paid Mrs. Raffald £1400 for the copyright in 1773. SIGNED by the author (title page states all copies are to be signed) in black ink to p.1, complete with two folding plates showing a first and second course. Re-backed in the mid twentieth-century in light tan calf, with raised bands, gilt titles to contrasting red and green labels, using contemporary marbled calf boards. Cased using bright cream endpapers. Quite heavily toned to edges and title page; moderately toned throughout. Modern endpapers do not match the original paperstock. Occasional marks and spots; a clean copy overall. Light wear to original boards; corners bumped. Modern spine is perhaps a little bleached, but never matched the colour of the boards. Spine and endpaper materials could have been more carefully chosen, but still very good.
