This pioneering seal hunter from Stonington Connecticut opened the South Seas to American trade and was instrumental in getting the Wilkes expedition approved. For a man of action Captain Fanning is a careful writer, observant and respectful, and relatively free of prejudice toward the men serving under him and the indigenous peoples he encountered.
