Minor pencil marking to front free end-paper. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Gilt lettering is darkened. Sunning to spine.

Blue cloth printed in gilt, no dustjacket. Covers edgeworn with chipping to the spine head, rear cover unevenly bleached from contact with something patterned, spine tanned, good hinges, sound text block, lightly age-toned but clean pages with a gift notation on the front free endpaper and decorative name stamp on the half-title, no other markings. . Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Headley Brothers, 1911. Believed First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable. Hardback lacks dustwrapper, boards are rubbed to all edges and there is a small chip to top of spine but titles are undamaged, no fading, spine is slightly discoloured. Although this is undated there is a pencil note to front pastedown stating it is the 1911 original issue. No other inscriptions noted. Illustrated, Clean copy internally with little wear, no loose pages. All tipped in plates present and undamged, fold out map undamaged. Heavy book, will require additional postage outside the the UK.

The author was a botanist, explorer, plant hunter and author of the English Rock Garden and many others, who here describes his travels and climbs in the Alps and other parts of Europe. Neate F06. Cox p. 103: 'Copies of the first edition usually have the lower three lines of the title covered by a gummed slip, London, the Swarthmore Press'. This copy has the slip present.
