The text is illustrated with numerous black-and-white illustrations (307) of which 21 are full-page. Blue coloured textured cloth covered boards with gilt illustration to the front panel and gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. A carefully revised second edition of a work that was first published in circa 1870, ( this preface is dated January 1873). An early book on birds and reptiles and their common ancestry and how they diverged using the radical theory put forth by Charles Darwin. Tremendous account of the various orders of birds and reptiles by the french scientist. With 307 b/w illustrations. brown cloth with beveled boards. No date but c. 1892. Some rubbing to edges and top of spine. Spine slightly cocked. Previous owner's name to ffep. Foxing to front matter and page edges. Contents clean and binding sound. Good.
